THE BEST PHONES UNDER 10K IN KENYA (2019)

If you have 10,000 kenya shillings and you want to buy a smartphone, read this post first. There are misconceptions you have to get rid of if you want to buy a phone under 10k. Likewise, there are important factors to consider in making your choice for you to get a good smartphone under 10k.

Out of the many smartphones I have owned, only one had a cost of over 10000 shillings. I have purchased several phones under 10k, some good and others terrible. I hope I will help you avoid some of the stupid mistakes I made. And of my good decisions, may you apply them and scoop a good smartphone.

Here are a few things to note.

10, 000 shillings is Enough

10k is enough to get you a good enough phone. I am a blogger, I take photos using my phone, I record YouTube videos, I am online most times of the day, I chat with several people both in business and friends, I play a few games on my phone when I have time, and I also read the Bible on my phone.

In my experience, the less than 10k phone that I use enables me do all the things I have mentioned above. Some of them it does better than others but I hope this will help you believe that a 10k phone is good enough for most people. I wonder what more you may be looking for in a phone apart from what I have mentioned.

Your Preferences Come First

I understand you may have consulted a few friends about your decision to buy a new phone before finding this article. If you have done so, it is okay. However, I want you to know that the phone you are buying is yours. You will bear the good and the bad that the phone will bring to you. The friends who “advised” you, together with the “articles” you read won’t be there.

Therefore, after all these research, remember the decision is yours. Put your needs, wants and preferences first. Listen to other people but don’t let their preferences of the phone you want to buy come before your own.

It is not the end of the World

I hope you know that buying a new phone has risks. You risk spending 10000 shillings on a phone that does not suit your needs. In case you make a wrong decision, don’t hate yourself. You will still buy smartphones many other times. We all make wrong decisions in many areas of our lives. Fear not. My aim of writing this article is to try and reduce the risk of you spending your money on a phone that you don’t like.

Specs are Partly Just Numbers

When buying a phone under 10k, do not pay too much attention on specs. They are not as serious as you may think they are. Buying a 2 GB RAM phone and a 1 GB RAM phone has very little difference if the 1 GB RAM phone does not lag. What people actually want is a phone that runs smoothly not the numbers.

In my experience, I have bought phones with a 13 MP camera but the quality was not any better compared to other phones I had that had an 8 MP camera. At the end of it all, I realized all I wanted was decent photos.

Needs Vs Wants

Needs are necessities you must have but wants are luxuries that you can do without. Before buying your 10k phone, determine what are your needs and what are your wants. For example, you need a phone that can access the internet but you want a phone that can access the internet at 4G speeds. You can survive with a 3G phone but you cannot survive without internet on the phone.

Needs are few. Wants originate from needs. Meet all your needs first before jumping to wants.

The Best Phones Under 10K in Kenya Right Now!

Unlike what you may want to hear, I will not say any particular phone is the best under 10k. Each phone has its own good and bad. Different people will find different phones to be the best for them. However, I will outline several smartphones that are among the best you can find currently in Kenya below 10000 shillings. Each of the phones has a link after its description that leads you to a shop where you can buy it.

Huawei Y5 Prime

Huawei Y5 prime is one of the best phones you can buy in Kenya under 10k. It is really promising especially that it is a Huawei. If you decide to buy this one, here are the specs you will get.

Screen Size 5.45 inches
RAM 2 GB
Internal Memory 16 GB
Main Camera 13 MP
Selfie Camera 5 MP

There is no precise price of this Huawei. Some sellers may sell it at higher prices than 10k. On Masoko, the Safaricom online shop, this Huawei costs about 11,300 shillings. On Kilimall, it costs about 9500 shillings. On Jumia, it retails for about 8,600 shillings. Click here to check its current price or Buy it on Jumia.

Tecno Spark 3

This Tecno is a beautiful phone. It looks great. Tecno is a famous brand right now in Kenya, which makes this Spark 3 trustworthy. This Tecno Spark 3 is barely a phone under 10k. Almost all shops sell it above 10k. But if you see it on this list, it means there is at least one shop that sells it below 10k. Here are its specs.

Screen Size 6.2 inches
RAM 2 GB
Internal Memory 16 GB
Main Camera Dual, 13 MP+2 MP
Selfie Camera 8 MP
Android Version 9.0 Pie

Battery 3500 mAH

The few shops that I have seen that sell this Tecno below 10k, are on Jumia and Kilimall. The price in both shops is 9800 shillings. Click here to visit the shop on Jumia. On Masoko, this Tecno costs 12,000 shillings.

Sony Xperia L1

Sony smartphones are not so famous here in Kenya. It may be even your first time hearing of a Sony smartphone. Despite Sony’s anonymity, their smartphones have really good quality. Their main downside is design. They are thicker than most phones and have basic square shape. If you are tired with the Chinese brands, give this Sony a try. Here are its specs.

Screen Size 5.5 inches
RAM 2 GB
Internal Memory 16 GB
Main Camera 13 MP
Selfie Camera 5 MP
Android Version 7.0 Nougat
Connectivity 3G
Battery 2620 mAh

This Sony phone was released way back in 2017, which means few shops are selling it now. There are also high chances that the phone you buy is refurbished. If that sounds too risky for you, avoid this phone. You can find this phone on Jumia for about 9,900 shillings. Click here to see it on Jumia. On Kilimall, a refurbished one goes for 7,600 shillings. Other sellers do not have this phone.

Nokia 3.1

Nokia has struggled since the inception of smartphones. They barely get the attention they had during the push button phones era. However, this Nokia 3.1 is a good choice for a phone under 10k. Here are the specs to expect if you are buying this Nokia

Screen Size 5.2 Inches
RAM 2 GB
Internal Memory 16 GB
Main Camera 13 MP
Selfie Camera 8 MP
Android Version 8.0 Oreo
Connectivity 4G
Battery 2990 mAh

There is another version of this Nokia 3.1 that has 3GB RAM and 32GB Internal Memory and it costs over 10k. This 2GB RAM version costs slightly over 10k in most shops. I have not seen this version on Kilimall. On Masoko, it costs 11,900 shillings. On Jumia, it costs 9,000 shillings. Click here to visit the specific shop selling it on Jumia.

Huawei Y6 2017

This Huawei Y6 is a little old though it packs almost all the latest features. It is the cheapest phone on this list. If you want to save the most amount of money, get this Huawei Y6. Look at its specs.

Screen Size 5.0 inches
RAM 2 GB
Internal Memory 16 GB

Battery 3000 mAh

Because this Huawei is a bit old, I have only seen it on Jumia where it costs 7,000 shillings. Click here to buy it.

Honor 7S

Honor is a branch of the Huawei company. The similarities in their phones are conspicuous. This Honor 7S is a bit old. It was released in May 2018. It is the second cheapest phone on this list. Here are its specs.

Screen Size 5.45 inches
RAM 2 GB
Internal Memory 16 GB
Main Camera 13 MP
Selfie Camera 5 MP
Android Version 8.1 Oreo
Connectivity 4G
Battery 3020 mAh

On Jumia smartphones, this Honor 7S retails at 7,900 shillings. Click here to visit the shop. I have not seen this phone on other online retailers.

Conclusion

The above 6 phones are among the best phones you can buy in Kenya below 10,000 shillings at the moment. Some of these phones are old such as the Sony, Huawei Y6, Nokia 3.1, and the Honor 7S. If you want a brand new phone, pick either the Tecno Spark 3 or Huawei Y5 Prime.
